While maintaining a smooth and soft hair is hard, building hair volume seems quite harder. Apparently, it is not enough that your hair is shiny and silky. You also need to boost your hair volume for that straight, soft and glowing hair that bounces perfectly. Unfortunately, most women suffer from bad hair days because they lack knowledge on taking good care of their hair. Thus, you have to equip yourself with the right knowledge on how to build hair volume. Work on improving your hair with these smart and easy tips.

1. Make Good Use of Blow Dryer

Blow drying your hair doesn’t just give your hair that perfect curve; it can also help build hair volume. Basically, it is the heat that is working wonder on reshaping, manipulating and increasing your hair volume. Blow dry your hair upside down and in both directions using a hair brush. If your hair is flat, you have to blow dry minimal sections of your hair. It is also recommended to only use average heat and use heat protection such as Redken Pillow Proof Express Primer before blow drying to avoid any hair damage. You may also use hairspray or a curling brush for a better hair lift.

For guys / shorter hair, you can use “over” direction technique, all this means is you blow dry your hair in the opposite direction of hair growth.

A video from Dre Dexter below explaining on how to achieve maximum volume using blow dryer. Ladies, you can use this technique to add volume to your bang.

2. Give your Hair a Great Tease

Teasing or back combing has been very popular in the 80s but most women nowadays no longer tease their because of its bad reputation of damaging the hair. However, if you want to build your hair volume, you may want to give it a try. After all, there is no strong proof that teasing can cause damages to your hair.

To start teasing your hair, part your hair depending on the hair style you want. Use a long tail comb when sectioning off your hair. It is important to dry your hair first since strands often break when the hair is wet. Next, make a tease bun by creating a top layer and another one underneath it. To increase hair volume, tease only smaller hair sections. To avoid your hair from tangling, brush your hair slowly and carefully. Tease your hair on the top of your head to increase hair volume at the crown. Though hair teasing may be a bit outdated, that “beehive” hairstyle will help you improve your hair volume and take good care of it.

3. Pre-style your Hair with Cream, Mousse and Waxes

Before you blow dry your hair, you may want to apply different pre-stylers like cream, mousse and waxes to your hair. Pre-stylers are good for styling your hair and they are also great to increase your hair volume. Mousse is excellent in building hair volume and it is also inexpensive so you don’t have to worry about sending too much on pre-stylers. Opt for a volumising or thickening mousse and apply it on your damp hair. Eventually, you will notice that your hair is getting big and you’re on your way to having that perfectly bouncing straight hair.

Blow dry cream is also good when pre-styling your hair. It can help you have an excellent and effortless blow drying experience. Hair waxes are also great if you want to boost your hair volume since they can make your hair look thick and silky.

4. Curl your Hair Up

While curly hair best suits special occasions, curling your hair on ordinary days is also great. Not only will it make you look chic and glamorous but it will also help in building hair volume. Curling your hair may be a little hard and time consuming so if you’re doing it just for the sake of increasing hair volume, you can skip the other parts of your hair. You don’t have to curl your entire hair since little and fewer curls will do. These cute little curls are enough to make your hair look thicker and finer. Grab your hot rollers or flat iron and start making those beautifully crafted waves. You may mist it with hairspray before curling for better effects.

In video below Anna Lai shows 5 ways to curl your hair with a flat iron.

5. Volumise your Hair with Powder

One of the fastest and most effective ways of building hair volume is by using hair powder. Popularly known as dry shampoo, hair powder has volumising effects that make your hair grow fast. Volumising hair powders are very popular today and there are numerous brands available in the market that come in different styles. Hair powder is very popular but is also very affordable. Nonetheless, always choose the ones with high quality to prevent your hair from further damages.

To use it, you simply have to put hair powder on dry hair by spraying an average amount of it on different sections of your hair. You can also use it while teasing or backcombing your hair for faster effects. Don’t wait for days before you use dry shampoo or hair powder since the natural oil in your scalp will sabotage your hair volume long before you decide to apply it.

6. Lighten your Hair with Hair Colour or Bleach

Colouring your hair may not be your cup of tea. But if your hair is flat and needs more volume, you may want to consider lightening your hair. After all, you don’t need to have your entire hair coloured, a little bleach will do the work for your hair. Essentially, bleach has a volumising effect which also makes your hair cuticle a bit rough. Hence, a simple highlight can help increase your hair volume. Significantly, the bleach improves the texture of your hair and at the same time helping you have a better look.

This tip work well on brunette or asian hair.

7. Try Root Crimping

Like teasing, crimping your hair roots is no longer popular today. However, this strategy is as effective as teasing and back hair combing when it comes to improving your hair volume. Unlike curling and blow drying your hair, crimping is easier and more effortless. You just have to crimp the roots of your hair and presto! You already have that straight, perfectly volumised hair that you are dreaming of. Crimping the roots of your hair is great as it roughs up your hair’s texture, giving you a smooth, soft and silky looking hair that makes you stand out among other girls. Undoubtedly, this strategy is best when you are on the go and have no time to deal with flat irons and rollers.

8. Have that Overnight Bun

This is probably the most effortless thing you can do to improve hair volume. Without blow dryer, rollers, curling iron and pre-stylers, you can have an increased hair volume overnight. Simply tie your hair when it’s still damp. Make an effortless bun; sleep on it overnight and voila! You will have increased hair volume and soft waves right after you wake up. This tip is a no-brainer and does not require heat or hair products so if you want something easy and trouble free, you may want to consider the overnight bun.

9. Use Sea Salt Spray as Pre-styler

Pre-stylers are great in building hair volume. However, if you don’t have any of the popular pre-stylers like hair wax, cream and mousse, a sea salt spray is an excellent alternative. Basically, sea salt spray has the surprising power of increasing hair volume. For instance, when you go the beach and swim, you may notice that your hair gets dry the moment you step out of the water. Significantly, it is the salt water that made your hair feel and look instantly dry. You will not always notice but the volume of your hair increases and improves when you bathe in the sea. Thus, if you don’t have time to go to the beach for the natural salt water, you can use sea salt spray as an alternative. Use sea salt sprayer as pre-styler before blow drying, ironing or curling your hair. This way, you can easily achieve the hairstyle you want and later reap the benefits of this effective strategy.

10. Opt for High Quality Hair Products

While working on the above tips, it is important not to ignore the benefits of other hair products. Because only you can take good care of your hair, you have to be very picky when it comes to using hair products. Take time to have your research on the common ingredients found in most hair products. Take note of the harmful ones so when you see them included in a certain hair care product, you can avoid buying it right away. Also, don’t get mesmerized by cheap products in supermarkets, because most of them are of low quality. Such hair products are not good as they can cause certain hair damages.

When it comes to hair care, only opt for high quality products that will help you maintain a healthy and glowing hair. Always choose prime products over cheap ones to ensure safety and effectiveness.
